David Lawrence - Somerset based sculptor, creator of the 'From the Greenwood' range David Lawrence has always enjoyed the challenge of working in different fields and different media - the result of a ‘restless imagination’ he says. Before sculpting he was a painter, in photo realistic style, of the ‘Natural World’: flies, birds and the internal workings of the human body. From then to the hothouse of the advertising industry of West End London in the eighties: creating ‘pastiche’ Old Masters in oil paint: sausages painted in the style of Rembrandt, margarine in the style of Monet - it might have been painting but it wasn’t Art.
The desire to work at something more lasting and meaningful led ultimately to his escaping to an ancient house in a small village buried in the wild obscurity of the West of England. There followed a period of reflection and of scribbling in notebooks. And then, by a series of happy accidents he stumbled on a casting factory and it was suggested he turn his two dimensional musings into three dimensional reality. He became one of the main sculptors for Harmony Kingdom, helping to establish them, in their time, as a major International Collectible. The wildness of the landscape around him then inspired a series of Green men – symbols of the force of nature- which have proved extremely popular throughout the Western World.
